“I Thought Obedience Would Make This Easier”
Ministry often feels like a pressure cooker.
- You’re expected to preach fresh, powerful sermons every week.
- Shepherd people who don’t always want to be led.
- Carry the burden of declining attendance or disengaged volunteers.
- Look strong even when you feel completely spent.
And somewhere under all that weight, this thought creeps in:
“If God called me to this… why does it feel like it’s crushing me?”
If you’ve ever asked that, congratulations: You’re normal.
And you might be right where God wants you.
What if the pressure isn’t a sign that something’s wrong…
What if the pressure is proof that something’s right?
The Crushing Is Part of the Calling
God has a long track record of calling leaders—and then allowing them to be crushed, refined, and prepared before they carry out their assignment.
Think about it:
- Moses was crushed in the wilderness before leading Israel out of Egypt.
- David was anointed as king but was crushed in caves before ascending the throne.
- Peter was called to build the Church—but not before being crushed by his failure and restored by Jesus.
- Jesus Himself said, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies…” (John 12:24)
Crushing isn’t a detour. It’s often the curriculum.
Because pressure does what comfort never can.
- Pressure exposes what pride hides.
- Pressure strengthens what comfort softens.
- Pressure builds the kind of character your calling will require.
And yes—it hurts.
But the goal isn’t to break you. It’s to build in you the weight-bearing strength your leadership will demand in the future.
Don’t Escape the Pressure—Let God Use It
So, what do you do when the pressure feels overwhelming?
Don’t try to escape it. Let God form you through it.
Here’s how to shift your posture:
✅ Name the pressure.
Where is it showing up? Relationally? Spiritually? Emotionally? Organizationally? Be specific.
✅ Normalize the press.
Ministry isn’t supposed to be pressure-free. In fact, pressure may be the evidence of God’s preparation, not His absence.
✅ Nurture the growth.
Let the weight drive you to humility. To community. To depend on God, not shame or isolation.
You weren’t called to carry ministry pressure alone.
But you were called to be refined by it.
