Most churches struggle to maximize their mission because their model hasn’t been designed for movement.

(In case you’re wondering… I wrote this. And I’m a human. And I definitely recorded the podcast!)

December is a season of joy and celebration, but it can feel like a never-ending marathon for pastors and church staff. The services, events, and endless details pile up, leaving you collapsing onto the couch by Christmas Day instead of rejoicing with family and friends.

Sound familiar?

I spent nearly two decades working on church staff. Just over 13 as a lead pastor. When you work at a church, it’s easy to miss how much you’re missing during the Christmas season.

Consider this post a reminder: The weight of this season isn’t yours to carry alone.

When the Work Feels Overwhelming

The to-do list seems endless—planning Christmas Eve services, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring every detail runs smoothly. It’s tempting to believe the success of the season depends entirely on you.

But here’s the truth: God—not you—is the one who carries the results.

You know this intellectually, but take a moment and feel it emotionally and spiritually.

Yes, God has called you to serve with excellence and lead people. But He hasn’t asked you to bear the entire burden. God transforms hearts, touches lives, and draws people closer to Himself.

Your role is faithfulness, not perfection.

Remember Who You Work For

In the hustle of ministry, it’s easy to forget why you’re doing all this. The songs, sermons, and candlelit services are not about flawless execution.

They’re about celebrating Jesus—the One who carried the weight of the world so we wouldn’t have to.

You’re not working just for your elders, senior pastor, congregation, or team. Ultimately, you’re working for God Himself. And God measures success differently. He isn’t checking attendance numbers or production quality; He’s looking at the heart behind your service.

How to Stay Grounded in a Busy Season

Here are five ways to focus on what matters most this December:

1. Start Each Day with Prayer

Begin your day by surrendering your plans to God. Ask for strength, clarity, and joy as you serve, trusting Him to guide your steps.

2. Focus on Faithfulness, Not Flawlessness

Perfection isn’t God’s expectation. Instead, focus on being faithful, knowing His power is made perfect in your weakness.

3. Take Time to Worship

Don’t let busyness rob you of your personal connection to the Savior. Reflect on Scripture, sing a favorite hymn, or spend quiet time in prayer.

4. Delegate and Trust Your Team

Ministry isn’t meant to be done alone. Trust your team and empower volunteers. Remember, the church is a body where each part plays a vital role.

5. Let Go of the Results

The hardest step is often the most freeing. Once you’ve done your best, leave the outcomes to God. He’s the one who brings the harvest.

Rest in God’s Sovereignty

The Christmas story is a reminder of God’s sovereignty unfolding through humble beginnings. Mary and Joseph weren’t in control of the events surrounding Jesus’ birth—they were simply faithful.

The same is true for you. God’s plans don’t hinge on your perfection; they hinge on His power.

This Christmas, serve with joy, let go of the results, and rest in the knowledge that the weight isn’t yours to carry—it never was.
