THE 7-DAY INTENTIONAL CHURCH HEALTH CHECK

7 Days to Rethink Your Mission, Clarify Your Vision, and Lead on Purpose

When You Wonder If It Was Worth It (and Why It Still Is)

Ever wonder if all the sermons, counseling sessions, and sleepless Saturdays are worth it? The answer depends on how you define “worth.” Here’s how to reframe your scoreboard—and remember why faithfulness still matters.

Lead a Thriving Church

BEGINNING THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. EST.

Build a repeatable volunteer pipeline so serving stops depending on weekly asks and starts functioning like a system.

Most churches struggle to maximize their mission because their model hasn’t been designed for movement.

(In case you’re wondering… I wrote this. And I’m a human. And I definitely recorded the podcast!)

(For every pastor who’s given everything and still wonders if it mattered)

When You Wonder If the Work Was Worth It

You know the feeling.

You’ve preached your heart out, counseled another couple in crisis, stayed up late tweaking Sunday’s message, and poured every ounce of yourself into ministry.
Then Monday rolls around, and the question sneaks in quietly:

Was it worth it?

It’s not a question of calling—it’s a question of outcome.
Because ministry requires massive emotional and spiritual investment… but rarely offers immediate return.

There’s no applause meter, no quarterly bonus, no clear metrics that measure spiritual growth.
Instead, there are blank stares, empty seats, and the occasional “good sermon, pastor.”

And when that’s all you can see, the pressure to prove the work was “worth it” starts to build.
That’s when the inner critic pipes up:

“Did it even matter?”

My Assessment of the Pressure Inventory

I created a Pressure Inventory assessment in June. Lot’s of people (like you) have taken this 5-minute assessment.

The results have been clear to say the least.

The inventory assesses the pressure felt in seven categories. Things like performance, organizational, and relational are rated based on the answers.

Any guesses which pressure is at the top of the list for 90% of respondents?

Emotional & Mental Pressure

Yes. More than culture and relationships and family and preaching, emotional and mental pressure is the most significant pressure most pastors face.

This is why we find ourselves asking, “Was it worth it?” “Did it even matter?

Redefining “Worth”

These aren’t the wrong questions to ask, provided we consider some better definitions.

If “worth it” means visible results, ministry will always disappoint.
But if “worth it” means faithful obedience, the equation changes entirely.

We work hard because it matters.
But we trust God because only He makes things grow.

Our job is stewardship, not success.
We plant seeds through sermons, prayers, and pastoral conversations—but we don’t control the weather, the soil, or the harvest.

Paul said it this way:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”

Translation: stop confusing your effort with God’s outcomes.

How to Know It’s Still Worth It

When doubts creep in (and they will) and the emotional and mental pressures feel overwhelming, try reframing what “worth it” really means:

1. Reframe your personal scoreboard.
Faithfulness is the win. Obedience is success. Impact belongs to God.

2. Celebrate invisible fruit.
Just because you can’t see the roots doesn’t mean growth isn’t happening.

3. Trust the long game.
God never wastes effort—He just often hides the results until the time is right.

You may not see the harvest today, but the seeds are still growing.
And one day—maybe in this life, maybe in eternity—you’ll see what all those late nights and tired Mondays were really worth.

Because they were.
They always are.
