Sunday Is Not Your Super Bowl: Why That Mindset Is Wrecking Pastors

If Sunday feels like the Super Bowl every week, you’re carrying more than God ever asked of you. This post helps pastors reframe their mindset, reclaim their peace, and lead without the weight of performance.

Most churches struggle to maximize their mission because their model hasn’t been designed for movement.

(In case you’re wondering… I wrote this. And I’m a human. And I definitely recorded the podcast!)

Let’s just get this out of the way:

What you do on Sundays is a big deal. Really big.

Preaching matters. Pastoral leadership matters.

The church’s mission is the most important mission on the planet.

The Moment That Says It All

For over 13 years, I served as the lead pastor at Woodstock City Church.

Nearly every Sunday before services began, we’d huddle with the worship band and production team to walk through the service and cast vision.

And almost every time, someone would say:

“Don’t forget, someone here today is giving God and the church one more shot.”

I loved the heart behind that statement.
In hindsight, I hate the pressure it created.

Before you cue your mental hype speech and visualize running out of the locker room to start the Sunday service…

Let me offer you a gentle reminder:

Sunday Is Not Your Super Bowl.

You’re not the MVP.

No one’s handing out game balls in the church lobby.

But yes, Sunday does matter.

In fact, in some ways, it matters more than the actual Super Bowl.

This dichotomy creates plenty of pressure.

The Pressure of Sunday Performance

Let’s pinpoint the pressure you’re feeling:

  • That subtle drift toward performance.
  • The internal scoreboard lighting up when attendance dips or a joke falls flat.
  • The urge to make every week “bigger,” more “impactful,” or Instagram-worthy.

Why do you feel it?

Because the stakes feel so high.

And you’re right—they are.

But they’re not yours to carry alone.

The Weight Is Real… But It’s Not Yours Alone

Pastoral leadership is supposed to feel heavy at times.

We’re not running a nonprofit.

We’re stewarding the local Body of Christ.
We’re shaping spiritual formation.
We’re guiding people through grief, doubt, divorce, and decisions.
We’re handling Scripture, not just strategies.

It’s weighty—because it matters.

But the moment that weight becomes yours alone, you’ve stepped into a role you were never designed to fill.

Work Hard. Trust Harder.

Paul said it best:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6

Translation?

✅ Do the work
✅ Preach the message
✅ Lead with clarity
✅ Show up prepared
✅ Pour your heart into it

Then let it go.

Because growth isn’t yours to manufacture.

Sunday is not your moment.

It’s God’s.

You’re a steward, not a savior. A voice, not the vine.

When Sunday Becomes a Performance…

We all fall prey to a performance mindset at times. It’s born from our human insecurities.

When this happens, though:

  • You lose perspective.
  • You lose joy.
  • You lose trust.

Sunday is one part of the mission, not the whole thing.
Preaching is powerful, but it’s one tool among many.

And you, pastor?

You were never meant to sprint toward burnout in the name of faithfulness.

The healthiest pastors I know?

They work hard, preach faithfully… and then take a nap.

Not out of laziness. Out of trust.

Because they believe God is working—even if no one claps for it.

If Sunday Didn’t Go How You Hoped…

If your sermon didn’t land…
If attendance dipped…
If the livestream crashed or the mic muted your intro…

You’re not a failure. And this isn’t a game.

You’re a pastor.
Called to faithfulness.
Invited to trust.

Sunday is not your Super Bowl.

It’s just another opportunity to do what really matters without letting it become everything.
