Most churches struggle to maximize their mission because their model hasn’t been designed for movement.

(In case you’re wondering… I wrote this. And I’m a human. And I definitely recorded the podcast!)

You know the drill.

You step off the stage, shake a few hands, maybe grab that much-needed cup of coffee. And then it happens—the reel starts rolling in your head. The dreaded post-sermon replay.

Suddenly, you’re back on stage in your mind, wishing you had used a better illustration, repeated that one point, or skipped the line that came out clumsier than you intended.

It’s like watching game film, only instead of celebrating the highlights, you’re cringing at every fumble.

The worst part? This mental rerun doesn’t lighten the load. It piles on more pressure, steals your Sunday afternoon joy, and makes you question whether you’re really cut out for this.

The Problem with the Replay

Preaching is one of the hardest leadership tasks there is.

  • You pour hours into preparation.
  • You carry the weight of responsibility.
  • You deliver it live—no edits, no second takes.

Just you, your Bible, and a room full of people who expect to hear from God through you. Talk about pressure.

So when it’s over, the natural response is to replay it in your head. But left unchecked, that replay isn’t review—it’s a hostile takeover of your peace.

Flipping the Replay

Here’s the shift I had to make—and maybe you do too.

The post-sermon replay doesn’t have to be a beatdown. It can actually become a growth tool if you flip how you use it.

Think like an athlete reviewing film. They don’t watch tape to wallow in mistakes—they watch it to sharpen skills and get better for the next game.

You can do the same.

  • Instead of obsessing over the one story that fell flat, celebrate the two that connected and process how to tell an even better story next time.
  • Instead of fixating on the missed line, ask how you can tighten your flow next week. Could a preview monitor help make sure the important points land exactly as planned?
  • Instead of rehashing what you can’t change, write down one thing you’ll do differently next Sunday.

A Better Rhythm

Here’s a simple way to turn the dreaded replay into your best rehearsal:

  1. Celebrate three wins. What worked? Where did you see engagement? What moment carried the most weight? Write them down.
  2. Note one opportunity. Just one. What’s the single area that, if improved, would make the biggest difference next week?
  3. Invite feedback. Share your reflections with a trusted leader or teammate. Ask them to affirm the wins and speak into the opportunity.

That’s it. Simple. Repeatable. Life-giving.

Moving Forward

You’re always going to replay your sermons. That part doesn’t change. But how you handle it can.

You can let the replay pile on pressure and steal your confidence—or you can use it to sharpen your skills and strengthen your calling.

The choice is yours.
